The Mercedes-Benz GLS450 will carry a base price of $76,195 when it goes on sale later this year.
That's $5050 more than the base price of the 2019 GLS450, but the new model comes with a host of additional standard features.
BMW's all-new three-row X7 is the GLS's main competitor, and it's similarly priced, starting at $74,895.

Mercedes-Benz has announced pricing for the all-new 2020 GLS450, and with a base price of $76,195, it's a $5050 leap over the 2019 model. The 2020 GLS brings a lot of bang for the extra bucks, though, with a longer list of standard equipment and more advanced technology features.

For starters, in place of the outgoing GLS450's twin-turbo V-6, the new GLS450 comes with Mercedes-Benz's turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine that has a hybrid-assist system. We've tested this engine out in a variety of the brand's other products and found it to be silky smooth and plenty potent. Mercedes-Benz has not yet released pricing information for the V-8–powered GLS580, but it's sure to start higher than the $96,745 price of the 2019 GLS550, which used Benz's old 4.7-liter V-8.

Standard dual 12.3-inch displays stretch about two-thirds the length of the GLS's dashboard and dwarf the 2019 base model's single 7.0-inch display. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also newly standard, as are Mercedes's new MBUX infotainment system, wireless charging, and a Burmester surround sound stereo system.

The new GLS450 is offered in both six and seven-passenger seating configurations, with the second row captain's chairs being offered at no additional charge. Mercedes has also equipped the base GLS's interior with power front seats that have memory and lumbar support, a 64-color ambient interior lighting system, and a 115-volt household-style power outlet.

A host of driver-assistance features will also be standard, among them automated emergency braking, forward collision warning, and a driver attention monitor that were available on the 2019 model. Joining these features on the 2020 base model are blind-spot monitoring, a self-parking feature, a 360-degree exterior camera system, and a feature that warns you to potential traffic dangers when exiting the vehicle.

Like the outgoing model, the 2020 GLS-class will come standard with both all-wheel drive and an air-suspension system, but the new model can also be equipped with Mercedes's E-Active Body Control adaptive suspension system. The active suspension is novel, utilizing the car's hybrid system to quickly change its damping based on what a forward-facing camera sees on the road ahead, allowing it to deliver a smoother ride on potholed roads and adapt to changing off-road conditions. It can also hilariously bounce itself up and down to help the driver get unstuck from sand or mud. E-Active Body Control adds $8200 to the price of the also-new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-class, and we expect it to carry a similar premium here.

While the new GLS450 is a good bit more expensive than the old model, it's close in price to its main competitor, BMW's new X7 SUV. In six-cylinder form, the BMW is only $1300 cheaper than the Mercedes, and is equally easy to load up with options. The new GLS will hit dealerships at the end of this year, with pricing for the GLS580 model likely to come closer to then.

Took delivery of my 2020 GLS 450 yesterday. My goodness what a wonderful vehicle so far. My previous vehicles were a 2007 GL and a 2014 GL. Great changes were made in the 2020, one of them being the integrated dash and no "I-pad" looking navigation system. Thankfully the 2014 had the integrated dash but, of course, it was much smaller than the 2020 model.
