I was sat at traffic lights and got the messages on my dash in white '4matic Currently unavailable' then in red 'Without changing gear, consult workshop'

The car wont start is stuck in gear and cant be pushed. It was recovered and taken to a garage the next day. It had to be dragged onto a recovery truck but the following day started and was driven off. The garage diagnosed it and found a number of errors and they said it was related to the key not been recognised and next time it occurs use the key instead of the push start.

3 months later im driving along and the error 4matic Currently unavailable and the car drops into neutral. I pull over and turn the car off. I try to start it back up and Without changing gear, consult workshop is back on. The car is stuck in gear and recovered to a different garage. They diagnose it found a number of faults all relating to various components not communicating. I was out of town and decided to get it recovered back home. The car would not start until approximately 24 hours after it stopped and all a sudden it starts again.

I have taken it to a local garage and they have said it would be a number of things but unless you can unplug each connection while it is in fault.

I really want to get this fixed but im at a loss if anyone can help. The biggest 'coincidence' is both times it was torrential rain both times, both times the car started again after 24 hours without any intervention. WHATS GETTING WET???

I’m having the same issues on Merc A45 AMG. Have you sorted it? If so what was the solution?

Kind regards

No not sorted, been to 3 different Mercedes specialists none have been able to find out. Don’t even drive it anymore just sat on the drive.

Was your anything to do with driving in rain?

Let me know if you find anything out.

Also just to add. The recovery guy said it’s to do with 2 switches on top of the gearbox that aren’t supposed to get wet but do. Told the garage but they couldn’t find the switch.

So what did they do to fix it?

Absolutely nothing. First time it was dragged onto a recovery truck with all 4 wheels locked. It was a bank holiday so was delivered to the garage the next day. The car started and drove off the back no problem.

second time all four wheels locked on a Sunday night and was recovered to the garage and left in the car park but I was away from home. The Mercedes special could not get it to go after 6 hours. I rang RAC at 2pm and the turned up at 1.30am. The RAC started it up and drove it. I was sat in the car waiting 11hours waiting and tried to start it a number of times and nothing. I then drive it home 230 miles with no issue.

That’s so bizarre! I changed the Auxiliary battery as it said it was malfunctioning. Charged the main battery as it was low and the issue prevails. “4Matic unavailable” “contact workshop without changing gear” and the car won’t start. I’m at loss; I do have a basic OBD reader which potentially indicated a Pressure Control Solenoid so that’s the next thing I’ll be looking at.

a few things on the internet suggest battery and if it’s not 100% then can start throwing up issues. I asked the garage and said it was fine. Short of changing it for the sake of it I didn’t bother. My problem is I have to wait for it to happen before I can start to rule things out.

Good luck keep me updated if you can.

How long as it not started for now?

it’s been sat on the drive way for about 2 weeks now.

I had meter on the battery and alternator and both state battery is solid. It’s weird because when I charged the battery to full capacity this morning and installed it car started immediately then took it up and down the road and accelerated harshly as last time it was the harsh acceleration which triggered the errors and once again same error message. Managed to roll the car in neutral to the drive way as lost all gears. Turned the car off and it wouldn’t start again. So I really does sound like gearbox/electrical issue.

I’ll let you know as soon as I know anything.
